Gross Description
This is the body of an 11 kg, 8-yr-old (2/27/1999), neutered male American Eskimo dog in good body condition (score 6/9) with adequate muscle mass and body fat stores. The animal died on
The left forelimb has a circumferentially shaved area measuring 7cm in diameter centered over a catheter site on the cephalic vein area. A 22 x 28cm area is shaved over the caudal ventrum. Diffusely, there is scaling and crusting of the skin over the trunk, thicker and yellow around the preputial orifice and long the length of the prepuce. Black and brown flecks < 1mm in diameter populate the skin surface (4 x 7cm) along the prepuce. Bilaterally, symmetrical partial alopecia is present over the trunk, and hair over the left lateral thorax and abdomen is particularly sparse. An alopecic area measuring 13 x 2cm is over the right shoulder, with a 4 x 5cm dark red to purple (bruising) area at cranio-dorsal end. The surface of the bruise is raised and brown at its center. The skin of the right ventrum has ~12mm in diameter, the left ventrum has ~6 lesions. The anus and perianal hair is stained w/ loose feces. Tan, waxy debris is present at the bases of the pinnae bilaterally. There is bilateral wasting of the shoulder and hamstring muscles.
Dark brown tartar is present at the teeth and gingival interfaces on all four dental arcades. The buccal gingival of the left upper first molar are dark red to purple and recessed; the left upper fourth premolar is missing.
Blood-tinged foam is present from the distal third of the trachea to level of the distal bronchi. The lungs are wet and heavy. Lung surfaces are covered with smooth, coalescing areas of dark red to purple discoloration. Lobes of the left lung are relatively more discolored than those of the right lung. The pericardial surface has moderate fat deposits. The left atrioventricular valve has ~12, 1-2mm spherical smooth pink-tan nodules distributed across its leaflets; the right atrioventricular valve has ~6 of these nodules.
The pyloric region of the stomach contains compacted ingest consisting predominately of hair and plant material. The duodenum has multifocal areas of ecchymotic hemorrhages on its visceral surface. The pancreas has multiple firm iobular nodules throughout. The liver has an enhanced reticular pattern and is slightly congested. The surface is diffusely mottled with smooth, dark red to brown areas. The liver weighs 590 g (5.36% of body weight; normal is 3%). The left adrenal gland measures 2.6 x 1.3 x 0.7 cm; the right adrenal gland measures 3.2 x 1.4 x 1.0cm. The adrenal cortices are markedly thickened bilaterally. The left kidney has a large cist measuring 9x17mm extending from the cortex into the medulla. Clear fluid is expressed from the cyst when cut. The urinary bladder has multifocal reddened areas up to 6mm in diameter on the mucosal surface of the bladder vertex and body (ecchymotic hemorrhages).
The cerebellum is grossly visible dorsal to the brainstem through the foramen magnum. The pituitary gland is not recognizable, but its position is occupied by a soft, tan structure measuring -10x11mm along with thick dark brown opaque, watery fluid.
